From 10 Years in Corporate to Real Estate Success: How Kimberly Chow Built a Life of Intentionality

March 23, 20263 min read

Most moms I talk to have a "one day" dream. One day, I’ll leave this 9-5. One day, I’ll have the flexibility to actually be present for my kids without checking my email under the dinner table. One day, I’ll start that business.

But "one day" is a dangerous place to live.

Recently, I sat down with my mentee and MomBoss Academy alum, Kimberly Chow, to talk about how she turned her "one day" into her "day one." After a decade in the corporate world, she made the leap into real estate—not just as a job, but as a way to build a legacy for her family.

If you’re feeling stuck in the "paycheck to paycheck" cycle or wondering if you have what it takes to be your own boss, Kimberly’s journey is the wake-up call you need.

The "Amazon Monkey" Analogy

Leaving a stable salary is terrifying. Kimberly shared a brilliant analogy she heard: To get from one tree to the next, a monkey has to let go of the first branch for a split second. That moment in mid-air? That’s where the growth happens. It’s uncomfortable, it’s scary, and it’s where most people turn back. Kimberly realized that hanging onto the "certainty" of a corporate job was actually the thing keeping her from the flexibility she craved.

Why Your First Investment is Your Safety Net

Here’s the perceptive bit: Kimberly didn't just quit on a whim. Her property journey played a massive role. When she and her husband collected the keys to their investment property, it hit her... this wasn't just a building; it was options.

That rental income and the equity they built gave her the "buffer" to pause, breathe, and choose her next move instead of rushing back to a desk out of desperation.

The Lesson: Financial planning isn't just about numbers; it’s about buying yourself the freedom to change your mind.

Personal Branding for the "Camera Shy"

One of the biggest hurdles Kimberly faced was the "shyness" factor. As a realtor, she knew she needed to be visible, but like many of us, she wasn't exactly thrilled about jumping in front of a camera.

Through her time at MomBoss Academy, she shifted her focus from selling to value-adding.

  • Find your "Why": When you know your purpose (for Kimberly, it’s helping families find clarity), the "how" becomes easier.

  • The Power of Attraction: By sharing her opinions and her life (family, hobbies, property tips), she started attracting clients who actually align with her. No more "difficult" clients; just people who trust her because they already feel like they know her.

Own Stay vs. Investment: Stop Following the Hype

Since Kimberly is now an expert in the field, I had to ask for some straight-talk on property. Her best advice? Stop looking at "Project of the Year" lists and start looking at your life.

  • Own Stay: It’s about livability, schools, and your daily flow. Don't force your family to fit into a "good investment" if it makes your life miserable.

  • Investment: It’s a math problem. What’s your time horizon? Do you need immediate cash flow or long-term capital appreciation?

A customized plan will beat a "hot tip" every single time.

The Cure for "Mom Guilt"

We wrapped up our chat with a reality check. Entrepreneurship isn't all Instagram filters and coffee shops. Kimberly gets real about "The Triple Guilt":

  1. Mom Guilt when she’s working.

  2. Work Guilt when she’s with her daughter.

  3. Rest Guilt when she’s actually trying to take a break.

Her solution? The Power of Three. Every morning, write down three priorities. Once those are done, the rest can wait. It’s not about balance; it’s about intentionality.

And if you’re ready to find your own "Why" and build a business that supports your life (instead of consuming it), come join us at MomBoss Academy. We’ll help you grab that next branch.
