I was recently in Kuala Lumpur, having dinner with my family when I witnessed something fascinating. At a nearby table, the restaurant owner approached holding a live fish – yes, fully alive! It wasn't just any fish. She began sharing the story: this fish was caught from a freshwater river in Perak, a rare breed, especially at this size. It weighed around 4kg and took years to grow. Only 8 had arrived that morning. And now, only 5 were left.
Suddenly, cameras came out, people were snapping photos and recording videos. And when the fish slipped from her hands (luckily landing back in the basket), the entire restaurant was captivated. Three minutes later, the fish was sold.
But here's the kicker: the fish cost over RM1000!
Without that story – without the tale of scarcity, time, and rarity – that fish would have been just another overpriced menu item. Instead, it became a trophy, something people could justify spending a small fortune on, and more importantly, something they were excited to share on social media. It wasn’t just a fish. It was an experience, a status symbol, a story they could own and tell.
Ten minutes later, I watched the owner repeat the same performance for another table. And I bet she sold that one too.
So what’s the lesson for entrepreneurs?
That’s the power of storytelling. When you share the why behind your product or service – the time, effort, rarity, and unique value – you transform it from a commodity into a must-have. A great story doesn’t just justify the price; it creates desire and urgency. People buy the story as much as they buy the product.
Look no further than the political world. Take JD Vance in the recent US Vice Presidential debate. When asked a question, what did he do? He didn’t jump straight to the facts. No, he told his story first – his origins, struggles, and values. And because of that, anyone who could relate to his upbringing or values would be far more likely to trust and agree with him. His story opened the door for his message to land.
Your brand needs to do the same.
Your customers aren’t just buying what you sell. They’re buying your story – your journey, your values, your “why.” It’s not just a product or service anymore. It’s an experience, a connection, and, when done right, it makes your brand unforgettable.
